Automated Equipment to Count Regional Trail Users
Bicyclist and pedestrian counts along the Razorback Regional Greenway, nearby feeder trails, and soft surface trails will take place from May 4 through May 19, 2017. The automated counting equipment includes small, infrared units attached to signage or trees and pneumatic tubes installed along paths or roadways. The equipment does not have the capability to record personal information or determine the identity of trail users.
The data being collected is part of an ongoing effort to evaluate active trail trends along existing and planned segments of the Northwest Arkansas trail system. A spring 2015 study
was conducted to create a baseline of trail usage. Study findings include:
- Northwest Arkansas has almost as many cyclists daily per capita using its trail system as San Francisco.
- The Northwest Arkansas region has almost as many pedestrians daily per capita using its trail system as San Diego County and more than the city of Portland, Ore.
