HBO’s True Detective Series Begins Production in Northwest Arkansas in 2018

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Arkansas Economic Development Commission (AEDC) announced today that the third installment of HBO’s “True Detective” series will be filmed and produced in Northwest Arkansas.

In October, Fayetteville City Council passed a resolution of intent (five members voted yes, three members were absent) “to participate in funding for a network episodic television series being filmed in Fayetteville in an amount not to exceed $500,000 over a two-year period.”

“This is a big win for Fayetteville, the Northwest Arkansas region, and its creative arts community,” said Mayor Lioneld Jordan. “I want to thank our City Council, City staff, the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce, the Arkansas Film Commission, AEDC, and Governor Hutchinson for all working on this opportunity for the state. This opportunity aligns perfectly with our Fayetteville First economic development plan.” Mayor Jordan continued, I’m excited for the positive impact it will have on our local businesses and the jobs it will provide for our citizens. We look forward to having HBO be a part of our community.”

To date, the True Detective production is the largest and most expensive production to be filmed in Arkansas with an expected economic impact of $100 million or more.

Arkansas Film Commission Chris Crane described Fayetteville and the Northwest Arkansas region as a “distinct character” in the series production. Nic Pizzolatto, the “True Detective” series creator, graduated from the University of Arkansas in 2005 with a M.F.A. in creative writing.
